“Sarah Amos is an artist who continually pushes the boundaries of the landscape tradition. She does so also with her chosen medium of printmaking, not afraid to explore, experiment and invent. Contrary to the standard practice of printing editions, Amos makes works that are unique states. She draws over many of her prints, adding additional information in pencil, ink, paint or wash. The works are ambitious in size: they are no longer merely works on paper but instead tapestry-like in scale. The image is pushed all the way to the edge, which not only redefines the “printmaking border” but also positions the works within the realm of painting.” – Vincent Alessi, Critic, Melbourne, Australia Travel often fuels native Australian Sarah Amos’ newest bodies of work, and her 2014 works are largely inspired by a journey funded by the 2013 Joan Mitchell Award. Amos combined her recent travel experience to Central Australia with vanguard printmaking techniques using unconventional, woven materials and hand stitching. This new pivotal thesis by Amos questions the contemporary boundaries of printmaking through a groundbreaking, innovative process. Amos’ interest in using felt, linen, canvas, hemp and jute came from her desire to create many printed elements placed together on one surface, while maintaining the flexibility of manipulation, until she was ready to commit to the final image. The rawness of these fibrous fabrics mimics paper in weight, size, and readiness to accept a variety of printmaking techniques. Shen Chen: A Predisposition for Abstraction By Jonathan Goodman Shen Chen has been making abstract paintings for many years now—he began in 1982, when he had just graduated with a B.F.A. from the Shanghai Academy of Theater. At the time his inspiration came from Chinese literati and ink paintings. While he had solo shows at the China National Museum of Art and Beijing Gallery, and during the 1980s participated in several underground movements and schools, Shen Chen still had not expanded his idiom to include influence from Western abstract painters—he simply did not have examples on hand. But then, in 1988, he received a fellowship from the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, which brought him to America. He also became an exchange student for the New York Studio School of Painting and Sculpture, after which he moved to Boston, where he finished his M.F.A. degree from Boston University in 1991. Once he got his master’s, Shen Chen decided to move to New York to continue his career in art. In many ways, Shen Chen is no longer only Chinese or American; instead, like many artists from foreign countries who live and work in New York, he sees himself as part of the international community that has developed in the city. In fact, he has said, “Living in New York, I don’t feel I am a foreigner.” His current painting reflects the Asian and Western influences he has exposed himself to: he says, “My works reflect mixed cultures, both classical Chinese painting—literati painting in particular—and Western art.” At the same time, he is quick to exclude himself from contemporary Chinese painting and new Western art, largely because he feels any genuine or avant-garde art must be international and transcend particular cultures. His new paintings demonstrate a fineness of hand that in fact cannot be culturally placed, even when they suggest an esthetic grounded in Western practitioners of abstraction such as Mark Rothko and Agnes Marti

Chinese artist Lianghong Feng's paintings synthesize influences from the New York School of Abstract Expressionism and those of ancient Chinese calligraphy. But they transcend mere fusion: Feng interprets the tropes of abstraction with a compositional savvy that elevates his works to a uniquely realized art. Feng says, “I must avoid my pre-existing knowledge and constructs, and enter my personal terra incognita.” Though he clearly channels the hands of 20th century abstract masters (and also cites urban graffiti as a primary painting inspiration), his spontaneity is honest and his language is his own. The images evoke ethereal landscapes, snatches of dreams, the beauty lurking in the countless corners of the urban environment.

Grade's work overtly engages with its surrounding environments, both architectural and natural. When indoors, his work references built space. When presented outdoors, the work evolves materially. Weather patterns affect the work, and the exposed surfaces, evolve, disintegrate and morph into something new. Collector was installed in the Willapa Bay in Washington State as an oyster bed. During the piece's tenure in the bay, Grade continually tested the water quality; the waters in and around Seattle have been affected by pollution, which Grade called attention to with the work.

“It’s not about projecting an image, it’s about listening to where the image takes you.” – Daniel Kohn New York-based artist, Daniel Kohn has investigated genomics for nearly a decade in concert with the leading scientists of Genomic Research at the Broad Institute of MIT/Harvard. In those long-term studies, he developed an intuitive ‘language’ of gestural marks that, when deployed into his large-scale arrays, became veritable networks of symbols hinting at the underlying structures of the genomic code. Daniel Kohn's early work centered around a series depicting interiors of his family's house in the hamlet of "Changy", in the Berry region of France. Although representational in appearance, his work is investigative in nature, imbued with influences from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. The artist describes his influences and fascination around Interiors as an attempt to personalize the symbolism of The Last Supper from a secular perspective: "This series centers on the table, at first with figures, and later without. The table represents the center around which the life of the house breathes. Someone will get up early, have coffee at the table, and leave. Someone else will come later and be joined by another. Perhaps they have a breakfast conversation. Upon leaving they leave the breakfast fixings on the table for others… In such a way the day winds on, from breakfast to lunch to dinner. The rhythm of the house is written at the table, and these paintings record these events…" Following Kohn’s 1998 participation in World Views, a residency in the World Trade Center, the artist’s focus shifted to abstracted landscapes that seek to explore the viewer's sense of pace. Mr. Lee’s large-scale sculptures employ an array of materials to transform the space. Using natural materials and metal, his work explores themes of transformation and decay. At the heart of his aesthetic is the rawness of the material. Mr. Lee seeks to employ the material, not alter it, in creating his sculptural work. Whether he is working with twigs, fiber, logs or steel, the substance maintains its original character and it is the space that is altered and transformed. Mr. Lee, who lives and works in Korea, is a graduate of the Hong-Ik University where he studied carving and modeling. In 1997 he had his first solo show at the Seoul Arts Center. One year later, he was distinguished as "Today's Best Young Artist" by the Korea National Tourism Organization. In 1998 he was the recipient of the prestigious Osaka Triennial Grand Prize. Those two events catapulted Mr. Lee’s career forward and his body of work continues to grow and transform as he becomes increasingly recognized as a strong voice in the international contemporary sculpture community.

Soo Sunny Park, is known for creating otherworldly, immersive installations that transform their environments into seas of dancing light, reflection and shadow. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Soo Sunny Park received her BFA in painting and sculpture from Columbus College of Art & Design in Columbus, Ohio and a MFA in sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Park is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant; Grand Prize winner of the 19th Annual Michigan Fine Arts Competition; The Helen Foster Barnett Prize, National Academy Museum, New York; Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture residency, Skowhegan, Maine; Cité Internationale des Arts studio residency, Paris, France, and the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center Arts & Literary Arts Residency, Bellagio, Italy. Her most recent installations are Capturing Resonance (2011–12), created with composer Spencer Topel for the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts, Unwoven Light (2013) for Rice Gallery in Houston, Texas and an installation at at the New Britain Museum of Art (2014). Jonathan Prince has evolved an expansive conversation on contemporary sculpture, beginning with his successful Torn Steel series. The new Liquid State sculptures continue to test the physical boundaries of rigidity and fluidity of stainless steel -- a rigid material formed into wave-like undulations through extensive handwork and expert welding techniques. An array of patterned light and shadow is the unexpected gift of this highly reflective sculptural form. The artist has maintained his passion for sculpture throughout his distinguished and diverse professional career in the arts and sciences. Prince completed a doctorate at Columbia University and post-doctoral studies at the University of Southern California. Recent exhibitions include an installation of monumental steel works at the Sculpture Garden at 590 Madison Avenue, New York in 2011; permanent installation of his iconic work, LightBox, as part of the Julie and Edward J. Minskoff collection in New York City; the acquisition of Vestigial Block by the new Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum in Michigan; an exhibition of Torn Steel works at Christie’s Sculpture Garden at 535 Madison Avenue, New York in 2012; an installation at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza in New York City in 2012-2013; and, LIGHT/ DARK, an installation of black Cambrian granite sculpture at Hudson River Park, New York City in 2013.

Sadé is a New York based multi-disciplinary artist who works primarily with photography, video and site-based installation. Sadé is a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Fellowship, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council/ NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Art Fund for video and sculpture and a recent recipient Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant for her Engrams series. Sade has taught and lectured at Barnard College, Columbia University School of Architecture, University of Pennsylvania School of Architecture, Parsons School of Design, SUNY Old Westbury Art Department, and Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. Her work is in the collection of the Mead Museum Amherst, the Israel Museum and the Haifa Museum. In 2012, Sade was commissioned by the Center of Neural Science Laboratory at New York University to create “Reconfigured Memory”, an art piece that doubled as the facility’s conference table, in collaboration with Professor André Fenton.

“Each sculpture is a three-dimensional painting of shifting light, drawing all the colors of the environment, pulling down the sky, drawing up the earth and gathering everything in between. Quietly, gently stirring the light, each is alive: no beginning and no end.”—George Sherwood George Sherwood explores aesthetic systems of space, time, and the dynamic relationships of objects in motion. The choreography of each piece is governed by a set of basic movements, facilitated by an arrangement of aerodynamic surfaces connected by rotational points. His work is usually made of stainless steel, which has reflective qualities that integrate the sculpture into its environment. Wind speed and direction, shades of light, time of day, precipitation, and seasonal color transform the sculpture. CYNTHIA-REEVES Projects, in partnership with the Hudson River Park Trust, showed “Waves and Particles”, six seminal sculptures by Sherwood along the river from April through November of this year at Charles and Horatio Streets in New York City. Sherwood’s initial interest in the art of movement began while attending the Hartfort Art school during the 1970’s. Drawn to and inspired by physical theater groups such as Mummenschanz, Pilobolus, and The Celebration Mime Theatre, he developed a theatrical performance consisting of large animated props, sculptures and masks that were physically manipulated by the artist. After earning an engineering degree from the University of Vermont in the 1980’s he turned his focus to Concept Development for LEGO Futura, the Research and Development arm of LEGO. Working with advanced technologies and as a liaison with the MIT Media Lab, he was part of a team that helped develop preliminary concepts leading to the creation of Mindstorms and Virtual LEGO construction software.
